Ellen was born on June 16, 1929 in Burns Lake to Andy and Sophie Anderson. While living in the Lakes District, she received her schooling, was a member of the Young Rangers youth group, and worked at the Post Office. She moved with her parents and sisters to Victoria in 1946.
After graduating high school, Ellen joined the Royal Canadian Airforce. She married Alex Heggie in St. Hubert, Quebec on September 29, 1953, and had two children, Ann and Andrew. Ellen travelled extensively and lived in multiple countries as her husband worked in Canadian Embassies. Later in life, Ellen married Cecil Van Allen and lived in Chilliwack, where she remained until her passing on July 5, 2021, with family at her side.
Ellen was a very accomplished seamstress and crafter, with many receiving her creations. Over the years, Ellen enjoyed multiple trips back to Burns Lake to visit her Carlson and Saul cousins and many friends. Ellen was predeceased by her parents, her husbands, and her sister Bess. Ellen is survived by her children, and her sister Mary.
The family thanks Bernadette Peebles for her friendship with Ellen and for all of her help during this time.
An interment will be held at the Burns Lake Cemetery on August 9, 2021 at 1:30 pm.
