In their offering of Sangria, the Spanish shared a secret to beating the oppressive summer heat. As we are in the heart of summer, LitD decided to contribute a version that we enjoy. Feel free to double or triple the recipe…but only if you’re having guests of course.

Sangria

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle red wine - try a Rioja to keep consistent with the Spanish motif - a Cabernet, Merlot or Shiraz will also work
  • 1 lemon cut into wedges
  • 1 orange cut into wedges
  • 1 lime cut into wedges
  • 2 TB sugar
  • 3 oz Gin
  • 2 cups berries - we like strawberries and raspberries
  • 1 cup diced pineapple
  • 3 cups ginger ale

Preparation:

Pour wine into a pitcher and squeeze juice from the lemon, orange, and lime into mixture.  Toss in the squeezed wedges, berries, pineapple, sugar, orange juice, and gin.  Chill overnight.  Add ice and ginger ale when serving and let the summer melt away.
