If you’re ever near the new convention center (yes, I realize I should stop refering to it as the “new” convention center) and you find yourself craving a delicious microbrew, pop in to the first of several Old Dominion franchises slated to open in the DC area.
Old Dominion Brewhouse
Conveniently located near the Yellow Line metro exit (hook a right at the top of the escalator, then a left on M — you’ll be walking underneath the Convention Center span that crosses over M street — then a right on 9th, past the not yet open mongolian grill), the Old Dominion Brewhouse features an array of locally brewed (the private company is based in Loudon county) ales, lagers, stouts, and more.
Beer snobs who like hoppy beers will appreciate the medal winning New River Pale Ale and Tuppers’ Hop Pocket Ale, while those among you who favor less flavorful beers will enjoy the Tuppers’ Hop Pocket Pils and the Dominion Lager. On my last to trips to the ODB, I really enjoyed the Dominion Pale Ale. If you plan on making you way through the list of fourteen or so microbrews, be sure to have some food first! The fare is average bar food, but I do recommend you start with an order of their “naked” buffalo wings if you’re settling in for a while…and if you’re the dainty type, don’t worry — moist towelettes are provided for your post-wing preening.
Aside from the brews, ODB is an excellent venue for sports-watching. At last count (thanks, Molly!) there were 19 flat-screen tvs scattered throughout the bar and restaurant area. Speaking of which, the atmosphere isn’t particularly warm and inviting — there’s that distinct feeling that everything in the joint is formulaic. They’ve only been open about a month, so you shouldn’t expect remarkable service — not that it’s bad, it’s just … typical– yet. Let’s not forget, though, you’re stopping by for beer, not to make friends.
P.S. If you want to counter-act the “chain” feeling that the Brewhouse might induce (or your beer consumption), head across the intersection at 9th and M for a jolt of coffee at Breakwell’s. More about this cozy neighborhood coffee shop just as soon as I can convince certain parties to write it up.
