Okay, so this one isn’t in the District. In fact, it’s not even in the greater metropolitan area. To visit Johnny Cupcakes, you’ll have to be in Boston (our second favorite city in the world). Of course there’s a website, but where’s the fun in that?

Johnny Cupcakes

Located on Newbury Street in one of Boston’s hippest, hottest (two words we’re normally wary of here at LitD) shopping districts, Johnny Cupcakes looks at first like any other bakery: big dough mixer in the window, bakery display cases, cooling racks. I know what you’re thinking — this place must be better than Cakelove if it’s earned a mention on a DC web site.

Sorry, pal.

Johnny Cupcakes is, despite the name and the design of the store, a t-shirt shop. That’s it; no more, no less.

But these aren’t just any t-shirts. They’re clever twists on pop culture icons: from the standard cupcake and crossbones, to an E.T.-like silhouette of a chef on a bike with a cupcake in the handlebar basket, to a 60’s throwback “Make Cupcakes Not War” slogan, each skillfully crafted shirt is a sly, wry statement on…something. And, while Johnny (not exactly his real name) has his standard designs, he occasionally does short-run, limited edition shirts — upping their cache (and price — anywhere from $40 to $70 bucks. Hey, it’s Newbury Street. District residents: think Georgetown.).

On the scale of things, Johnny’s isn’t quite Paul Revere’s house, or the Old North Church, or Bunker Hill, or any of those more famous Beantown landmarks. But, if you find yourself in Boston and you don’t stop by, you’ll be missing out. I just wish they really did have cupcakes.

As the person to blame for Jason’s first trip to Johnny Cupcakes, I feel compelled to add that if you hit the store on the right day/time, you’ll get a mini cupcake baked by Johnny’s actual mom. They’re good…but the shirts are better.

I must say I was pretty excited about the prospect of baked goods imported from Boston when Jason walked through my front door carrying a Dunkin’ Donuts type box. Although I was a bit disappointed when I discovered it was a t-shirt instead of delicious cupcakes, I heart my cleverly designed green cupcake shamrock tee. I plan on wearing it proudly this weekend.

Life in the District is a guide to getting by in Washington, DC.
